Your Guide to the Indian Scout Motorcycle

Your Guide to the Indian Scout Motorcycle

Apr 1, 2022

If you're looking for a motorcycle that offers the best of both worlds–heritage-inspired design combined with modern performance–then you should consider the Indian Scout motorcycle. This bike has been winning over riders since its debut in 1920, later becoming a favorite with flat trackers, hill climbers, and stunt riders. Today, with its lightweight, sleek design and powerful engine, the Indian Scout is perfect for anyone who wants to experience the thrill of riding a motorcycle.

In this motorcycle guide, we will discuss the history of the Indian Scout, what makes it stand out, and insights on how to customize it to make it your own.

History of the Indian Scout Model

Indian introduced the Scout model in 1920, which was later replaced with a new version in 1928, the Scout 101, that offered better performance, a new frame with more fork rake, a lower seat height, and a longer wheelbase with better rider experience than previous bikes. The Indian Scout motorcycle gained popularity for its smaller design, unlike its competitors, which made it easier to handle and perfect for city streets. The Scout 101 runs an air-cooled, four-stroke, 740cc, v-twin engine.

However, due to the effects of the Great Recession, the production of the Scout 101 only ran until 1931. In 1932, the 101 was replaced with the Scout Standard, a cheaper, low-maintenance version until 1937. By 1940, Indian had begun to equip its motorcycles with full skirt fenders, a design that would become an icon for the brand. Indian Scouts were later used in World War II by the United States military.

Over the next years, Indian faced a number of ownership changes and financial difficulties, which led to a decline in Indian Scout production. In 2011, the Indian Motorcycle Company was purchased by Polaris Industries, and the development of new Indian Scout motorcycle models began. This began a new era for the Indian Scout, which is still being produced today.
